Project Shout Outs: Performer Mag AND KoreAm Journal
Author: Joanna
Performer Magazine, the nation’s largest musicians’ trade magazine, just printed a story about Mia’s fan-funding project.
Journalist Tripp Underwood writes, “For many indie artists, the concept of fan funding is more than just collecting donations and making albums, it’s a real connection between performers and an audience that is truly passionate about music.”
Amen to that! The Sukey Rose Project has been successful through the participation of people like you, whether you’re keeping up with the blog, voting in our polls, or spreading the word by putting up a banner on Facebook. We want to hear your opinions about the music and the ideas that are floating around in the independent music scene.

KoreAm Journal also caught Mia for a few questions in their August issue. You can find the interview with her on page 13 in the Spotlight section. And speaking of how independent musicians rely on the relationships with their fans, independent magazines rely on the support of their readers.
KoreAm Journal’s senior editor Julie Ha wrote a provocative open letter asking readers what they would do if they could help sustain the magazine if it could. The media is changing, newspapers have falling circulation numbers, and KoreAm is wondering what is necessary to keep the magazine thriving. If you have thoughts about this, you can join the conversation at www.savekoream.wordpress.com.

Project Shout Out: Audrey Magazine Features Indie Musicians
Author: Joanna
Audrey, an Asian American women’s lifestyle magazine, just released their Indie Music Issue. No, that’s not Mia on the cover. It’s Priscilla Ahn, another great singer of melodies. In this special issue, Mia is included in their list of up-and-coming Asian American musicians. Other musicians include Mylin, Shugo Tokumaru, Sue Jin, Renee Sebastian and Malea McGuinness. They should have also included The Sweet Hurt, led by AA lead singer Wendy Wang (yes, I’m namedropping).
Pick up an issue at your nearest Borders! Or whatever bookstore nearest you that might carry this fab mag.
Project & Studio Update
Author: mia
Hello All!
I’m happy to say we’ve reached one of our Project goals! On Thursday July 31st, we reached 100 (ONE HUNDRED!) project members! It means so much and I’m so very grateful. There are also people praying for me and rooting for me, and I can tell you, an artist is strengthened and becomes even bolder when they have people supporting them. So thank you! We also passed the $7,000 mark in our fan-funding this past weekend. Our original hope was to hit $10,000 by August 1st which was the deadline to cover a majority of studio costs, but I won’t get discouraged and will keep forging on to the final goal of 15K! In all this I keep reminding myself that the glass is half full, 7K raised by 100 people is an AMAZING accomplishment!!! I take no credit! It’s everyone coming together to make something bigger than us all, it’s so exciting, almost surreal!
As for recording, we are still in the process of building layers of instrumentation for the bigger songs (War, Safe.) Here’s a snippet of “Safe” below. More updates coming soon!

Project Shout Out: LapTopRockers Interview Mia
Author: Joanna
Laptoprockers is not about fat rockers with fat long hair and fat leather jackets. Hey, that’s what they said. Ever heard of them? Laptoprockers is a site that’s just starting out, but they’ve definitely got it going on, and we’re glad that we get to be part of their beginnings.
Laptoprockers is a site that covers interesting aspects of the music industry and they’re also from the Netherlands. Please check out their site, as well as the interview they did with Mia.
By the way, just in case you didn’t notice, we have 100 project members AND we’ve raised more than $7,000. Not bad, not bad. And you have minutes before it hits the 12:00 mark to be part of this pre-sale. After that…well, I can’t tell you here.
Trials and Tribulations
Author: mia
This week is off from recording, Tim has a conference! I’m catching up on some housekeeping, errands, promo for the Project, etc. So a couple weeks ago I almost gave up. Scrapped everything. “Tim, we’ve got to shelf it.” Artist=swept away by emotion I guess. I was feeling stressed about raising funds, doubting my worth, wanting to just quit and give up the album and music. It was like a storm of discouragement and negative thoughts came and battered me for a week. The biggest frustration was feeling insignificant. Insignificant musically, to the world, etc. But my faith got me through, and I read my trusty bible and the storm passed. But, truthfully if there were no project managers/support team and project members to keep me accountable, I would have run away and hid in a cave. Thankfully, I’m not alone! What causes stress? Well for one, feeling as if every note is final, down for posterity. Trusting another human being to bring the songs to fruition (still working on this one Tim, but I’m getting better, no?). Wondering if my stuff is really good or just ‘good’, though I know I don’t suck. Fearing that I’m wasting everyone’s money and time. Though the technical process or recording itself hasn’t been stressful, it’s these general questions about my identity and future as a musician that press upon me. It’s times like these I wish I was a driven, ambitious, slightly obnoxious but well-meaning diva. I’d get so much done! I know we all go through these times. It’s part of being human. Thanks for reading.

A Quick Hello!
Author: mia
I’m still here! And the Sukey Rose Project is still alive and kickin’! Last weekend I stole away to the mountains. I had a couple songwriting breakthroughs, wrote a new song last night (another haunting slow song) and we pretty much settled the track list today. Thank you to those who voted in the “hear your say” section to help me decide about which songs should go and which should stay. Adam the drummer is coming in on Thursday to track drums all day. Then it’s build build build. Will explain more in detail in a soon-to-come video blog!

p.s. please spread the word to anyone you may know who would be interested in supporting indie music. Thanks!
A Quick Note on Fan-Funding
Author: mia
Ya know? Maybe net based fan funding is not such a new idea after all…
“Hillary Clinton has taken to the internet to ask supporters to help with the more than $22.5 million in unpaid campaign debts — $12 million of which is owed to the candidate herself.”
You can read the rest of the article here:

She asking her fans to support her with about 10 million. (um, wow!!) The Sukey Rose Project only has 11,000 to go! Can we do it? We’re going to try, and we’re not giving up…
Video Blog #3

p.s. hmmm…I was a bit pooped when I did this vlog so I had to edit myself because I tend to ramble and when I say ‘turn the knob to make it slower’ I meant, ‘faster’. Also my finger is all better! I don’t know what it was, I think it might have been something other than playing the guitar. Too much laptop trackpad maybe? Wierd.
