For the past two months, I have had the JOY of meeting every Wednesday @ 7pm with a group of gals whom I lovingly refer to as ‘my support team’. I realized last year that I was not going to get anywhere on my own. I needed a group of supporters/friends, to keep me accountable to moving forward with finishing demos, contacting producers, etc. On my own, I was always putting things off. Making excuses. Thinking pessimistically. No more. For the past two months, I have asked for and been given deadlines (GET IT DONE BY FRIDAY!). I have been checked up on and encouraged to dream big. It’s amazing what you won’t do for yourself but what you will do when someone is counting on you to get it done.

Together we came up with timelines, plans, steps, ideas. Together we came up with the concept and structure of the Sukey Rose Project webpage. And together we are helping each other follow through. Recording the album is no longer ‘my venture’ but ‘OUR ADVENTURE’. The gals in my Support Team are my sounding board and encouragers. They continually gift their time freely to help in every way; promotion, fundraising, planning. They are God-given and without them I couldn’t have made it this far. Yes, I am hecka blessed! So if you need help getting yourself in gear, go get yourself a support team!!! And if you can’t find anyone, I will gladly be your first member. ‘Independant’ but not alone!

Your budget is settled, you’ve got a short list of producers. What next?

Next, you contact the producers and/or visit the studio in which you will be recording in. I spoke on the phone with one potential producer, visited the studio of another, and had email correspondence with the third. All three could help me make an amazing album.

I carefully listened all of their past work and consulted my support team. This is where the decision got a bit stressful! I had to really figure out what I wanted this album to sound like. It helps to have a clear idea of what genre/style your music is in and what your target market is. The producer you choose will designate the general direction you will go in terms of sound and style. Did I want this second album to sound more spacey/indie/alternative/rock? Did I want to go more in the direction of mainstream/singer/songwriter/pop/rock? Hmmm… After taking everything in consideration, I finally decided on a producer who I know would do an EXCELLENT job and made me feel *tres* comfortable in the studio. Someone I knew who could help me bring a bit of all genres into the songs. We’ll be starting pre-production in the first week of June and then record through the month of June!

Oh my, I’ve got to get to that fundraising. $3000 RAISED SO FAR!!!! Need at least $4000 more by the end of May and the rest by the end of June. Please spread the word. Thank you for supporting independent music.

The first big step to making your own album is finding a producer. The producer of your album will be the person who will help you take your songs from rough draft to completed form. The producer will also have a huge impact on what your album will sound like because ultimately he/she will be directing the actual recording of the sounds.

The cool thing about being an indie artist who hires their own producer is that you have the option of having a say in how the songs are recorded and what they’ll sound like. This is called ‘co-producing’. Most signed artists aren’t allowed to co-produce until they’ve established themselves as hit-makers or are on their 3rd or 4th album.

Well, today is May 1st. (Ok, so technically it’s May 2nd, 4am in the morning) It marks the launch of the Sukey Rose Project. This is terrifyingly exciting! What is terrifying you ask? Well, think about your most secret, dream of dreams. Something you’ve always wished for and wanted to accomplish. Now think of actually throwing caution to the wind and GOING FOR IT.. does your heart skip a beat. do you feel a rush of WOW IF ONLY and I CAN DO IT and then WHAT AM I THINKING? yeah.. it feels like that.

But hey, as an indie musician my goal and dream is to create and finish this album. And I have such wonderful people keeping me focused and on the path. It’s true that as an indie musician, you hit a point where you cannot progress on your own. You need H…E…L…P. Some people may look to managers, or record labels. For me, my help comes in the form of YOU! Friends, fans and supporters of all things Mia music.

So check back often as I’ll be posting blogs and vids about the whole process of making and promoting an album as an ‘indie’ artist. We’ll also have blogs from my support/management team and guest bloggers as well! In the meanwhile, you are invited to support independent music by participating in the presale. Pre-buy and/or donate to the dream and you will get immediate access to a download of all the new album demos! So.. THANK YOU in advance for your love and support and…

Hang on… CAUSE HERE WE GO!!!
