A Quick Note on Fan-Funding
Author: mia
Ya know? Maybe net based fan funding is not such a new idea after all…
“Hillary Clinton has taken to the internet to ask supporters to help with the more than $22.5 million in unpaid campaign debts — $12 million of which is owed to the candidate herself.”

She asking her fans to support her with about 10 million. (um, wow!!) The Sukey Rose Project only has 11,000 to go! Can we do it? We’re going to try, and we’re not giving up…

p.s. hmmm…I was a bit pooped when I did this vlog so I had to edit myself because I tend to ramble and when I say ‘turn the knob to make it slower’ I meant, ‘faster’. Also my finger is all better! I don’t know what it was, I think it might have been something other than playing the guitar. Too much laptop trackpad maybe? Wierd.

Feeling Behind
Author: mia
i’m feeling behind in every way. i just finished an email interview for a regional magazine. one of the questions was, ‘what have you learned so far from your fan-funding/fan-produced album experience?’ the main thing i wish i could have done was to launch the fundraiser 6 months ago. that way i could pay the producer on time, cause he deserves to be paid on time, but also i would be able to focus 100% on music in the studio and not stress to much about fundraising. but, talking with sofia tonight, i realized i wouldn’t have much to say in the blog. every entry would be… ’so we got a couple more presales today, now we’re up to ‘x’ amount!’. instead, cause i’m the studio, i can put up more interesting blog entries. Tales from the Studio, Day 6
Author: mia
Yesterday was day 6 in the studio and it has been going well! The first few days we recorded scratch tracks (rough guitar, vocal, and rhythm tracks to be used as reference for studio musicians, i.e. the drummer.) None of the scratch tracks are really used on the album which is good cause I was snifflin’ with my cold, but it’s almost gone. Today we tweaked the piano on “Siren”, added scratch vocals and Tim added these really cool key textures to the chorus. One of the sounds was this really bass-y, subsonic texture and it had the whole studio booming like a sat. night rave. Will do a proper video blog from the studio on Tuesday and give everyone a little tour!

Hi! It’s Annie. Got to see Mia in action yesterday at the NoHo recording studio! She was working really hard on her album. The process reminds me of what goes on in a movie set. After many takes and hours later, the first scene is finally over, and it’s only the first. Here’s a picture of the paint-splattered studio floor, which used to be an artist’s space, and Mia in her recording state: Take 3 ….
Guest Blogger: Musician Scott Tang

Hello All! We thought it would be nice to also have some special guests write about their experiences with Indie music and art. First up, my good music friend, Scott Tang! You must watch his “Sublingual” video. Not only is it a TOP rate, beautiful music video, it’s also an amazing testament to a group of artists coming together to create something stellar. Enjoy!

Hi guys. Mia recently asked me to write a blog entry for The Sukey Rose Project, about the making of my latest music video, my career as an indie Asian American musician, and more specifically, how the idea of community figures very strongly into both those things. Since The Sukey Rose Project is essentially a community-based idea, Mia asked if I could share my own thoughts on the subject. Instead of taking too much time to introduce myself, I’ll just point you to my website if you’re interested in who I am or what I’ve done: www.scotttang.com. Otherwise, I’ll just dive right in…

Preproduction Day 2: Writing out the chords to the songs

N. Hollywood/Burbank. beautiful mountains on the way home!
Proof- Day 1
Author: mia
PROOF that I’m in the studio in the pictures below! So the first day was actually today, Wed June 4th. Still have a cold but cold-eeze (near miracle stuff) is making it go quickly. Today we started by listening to nearly 20-30 of my favorite songs. Favorite for one reason or another. A lot of Death Cab, Tegan and Sara, some Eisley, and um.. knick and knacks from other sonic universes. It’s a time for Producer Tim to try to understand what sounds I like to hear, though I don’t know if i just ended up confusing us both. I was throwing around words like “gummy guitars” and ‘I love chewy guitar” and oh. a good one. “Rubbery”. (don’t ask). in any case it was a great start. conversation flowed up down and around music. it seems we enjoy many of the same bands. that’s always a good sign! Then we reviewed the demos and talked about general ideas. Tomorrow we continue with preproduction by notating chords and structures of the songs so charts of the songs can be made. Early bedtime tonight for me! More tomorrow!

Tim jamming along to the demos

Every studio has a requisite comfy couch. I can see this coming in handy for future naps.

Tim is definitely excited to star in the documentation of the recording of “Who Is Sukey Rose?”
Summa summa summa summer time

It’s JUNE already! And bummer, I’ve caught a summer cold. Hopefully that’s not going to make a big impact on… GOING INTO THE STUDIO TO START RECORDING MY ALBUM TOMORROW!!!! Whoo hoo! Tomorrow, Tuesday June 3rd, I’m going to begin something I’ve been trying to do for the past 4 freakin’ ‘years! It goes to show, if you really want to do something, if you never let go of it or give up, eventually it will come to pass.
Recording usually starts with ‘pre-production’, which is what I’ll be doing for the first few days in the studio. Preproduction is different with each producer you work with. Generally it means going over songs you will track (record), going over the direction of the sound, arrangements, lyrics, etc. Preproduction allows the musician and producer to get a good picture of what the album will look like overall and it’s a time for everyone involved to share their visions and get on the same page.
