Performer Magazine, the nation’s largest musicians’ trade magazine, just printed a story about Mia’s fan-funding project.

Journalist Tripp Underwood writes, “For many indie artists, the concept of fan funding is more than just collecting donations and making albums, it’s a real connection between performers and an audience that is truly passionate about music.”

Amen to that! The Sukey Rose Project has been successful through the participation of people like you, whether you’re keeping up with the blog, voting in our polls, or spreading the word by putting up a banner on Facebook. We want to hear your opinions about the music and the ideas that are floating around in the independent music scene.

KoreAm Journal also caught Mia for a few questions in their August issue. You can find the interview with her on page 13 in the Spotlight section. And speaking of how independent musicians rely on the relationships with their fans, independent magazines rely on the support of their readers.

KoreAm Journal’s senior editor Julie Ha wrote a provocative open letter asking readers what they would do if they could help sustain the magazine if it could. The media is changing, newspapers have falling circulation numbers, and KoreAm is wondering what is necessary to keep the magazine thriving. If you have thoughts about this, you can join the conversation at www.savekoream.wordpress.com.

Road Bump

Hello All! I hope you’re enjoying the last breaths of summer… I spent last week with my brother, sis in law and my two most amazing adorable nephews who were visiting from the East Coast. Let go of my worries for a bit, enjoyed the beach and also babysitting! But now it’s back onto the saddle…You may have noticed there’s been a bit of a silence on my side regarding the album… it’s cause, well, recording the new album has been put on pause. Yeah, it sucks, but I’m determined to make this into a positive thing. Some of the reasons I made the decision to put things on hold are due to funding and scheduling issues. At first I was really down about a perceived setback, but now I’m determined, hopeful and driven. I’m going to take this opportunity to try to do a bit more fan-funding and pray for a sponsor to help me finish the album. I’ll fill everyone in with more details soon. Just wanted to let you know that the project is still going, we’ve just hit a bit of a bump on the road, BUT! nothing’s gonna stop me… onward I go!

Audrey, an Asian American women’s lifestyle magazine, just released their Indie Music Issue. No, that’s not Mia on the cover. It’s Priscilla Ahn, another great singer of melodies. In this special issue, Mia is included in their list of up-and-coming Asian American musicians. Other musicians include Mylin, Shugo Tokumaru, Sue Jin, Renee Sebastian and Malea McGuinness. They should have also included The Sweet Hurt, led by AA lead singer Wendy Wang (yes, I’m namedropping).

Pick up an issue at your nearest Borders! Or whatever bookstore nearest you that might carry this fab mag.

Hello All!

I’m happy to say we’ve reached one of our Project goals! On Thursday July 31st, we reached 100 (ONE HUNDRED!) project members! It means so much and I’m so very grateful. There are also people praying for me and rooting for me, and I can tell you, an artist is strengthened and becomes even bolder when they have people supporting them. So thank you! We also passed the $7,000 mark in our fan-funding this past weekend. Our original hope was to hit $10,000 by August 1st which was the deadline to cover a majority of studio costs, but I won’t get discouraged and will keep forging on to the final goal of 15K! In all this I keep reminding myself that the glass is half full, 7K raised by 100 people is an AMAZING accomplishment!!! I take no credit! It’s everyone coming together to make something bigger than us all, it’s so exciting, almost surreal!

As for recording, we are still in the process of building layers of instrumentation for the bigger songs (War, Safe.) More updates coming soon!

-Mia :)
